7:00 pm
Northern Hills Synagogue - Congregation B'nai Avraham honored Rabbi Barnard with a Gala Tribute on Sunday evening.
The evening began with wine, hors d'oeuvres and elegant music from the Price Hill String Trio. Master of Ceremonies Mark Washofsky welcomed the congregants and guests, many from all over the United States who came to town for this occasion. Incoming President David Bernstein began the program with a heartfelt tribute, followed by musical entertainment by people who had a connection with NHS and Rabbi Barnard: NHS members and children who grew up in NHS.
First, Elliana Kirsh sang two songs, "Alleluia" by Mozart and "I Could Have Danced All Night." Then, violinist Gayna Bassin performed "Intermezzo" from "Cavalleria Rusticana" by Mascagni and "The Drinking Song" from "La Traviata" by Verdi, in recognition of the Rabbi's love of opera. Next, Cantor Sharon Hordes sang "Priestly Blessing" by NHS member Leon Lichtin and "Journey's Just Begun" by Rachelle Nelson. Finally, NHS member Judy Miller sang her original parody, "Let Him Go" to the tune of "Fiddler on the Roof." (For the lyrics, click here.) Claire Lee, pianist, accompanied all the performers.
Next on the program was "Traveling Through Time", a retrospective of the years 1975 through the present, led by Mark Washofsky, Irv Goodman, Edie Neusner, Steven Pentelnik, Arnie Horowitz, Lois Pornoy, Henry Fenichel, Jeff Bassin, Renee Roth and Sarah Barnard. Then, Rabbi Irvin Wise, who was out of town, gave a moving tribute to Rabbi Barnard in a projected video recorded by Gayna Bassin. Other tributes were given by David Zucker, Miram and Ryvka Barnard and Bernice Uttrich.
Finally, Rabbi Barnard address the audience and thanked everyone. Joe Lazear, in one of his last acts as outgoing President of the congregation, presented him with a gift of a David Moss Hagaddah, a limited edition illustrated Hagaddah.
Jazz pianist Dan Karlsberg performed while everyone enjoyed a festive dessert reception.
