Guest Speaker: Carol Hershenson
Curator of the Study Collection
University of Cincinnati
HaZak, our Solomon Schechter Award-winning program, is dedicated to serving the social, educational, and religious needs of our members aged 55 and over. The word HaZaK, which means "strength" in Hebrew, also stands for Hokhma (Wisdom), Ziknah (Maturity) and Kadimah (Looking Forward).
Carol Hershenson, Curator of the Study Collection of the Department of Classics at the University of Cincinnati, was guest speaker for a festive Hazak lunch during the Sukkot holiday. Rabbi David Siff led a brief kiddush in the NHS sukkah, and we all enjoyed apple cake in the sukkah. After a delicious lunch buffet of quiche and pancakes, Rabbi Siff led Birkat HaMazon (Grace after Meals).
Bea Goodman introduced NHS member Carol Hershenson as guest speaker. Carol brought a number of antiquities, mainly ancient pottery from Greece, to pass around to illustrate her PowerPoint presentation. It was thriling to be able to get that close to objects so old and fragile.
