Hazak Lunch and Program
"What is our Purpose as a Conservative Synagogue?"
Guest Speaker: Rabbi David Siff
Wednesday, November 19, 2014
Hazak, Northern Hills Synagogue's Solomon Schechter Award-winning program, is dedicated to serving
the social, educational, and religious needs of our members aged 55
and over. The word HaZaK,
which means "strength" in Hebrew, also stands for Hokhma (Wisdom), Ziknah (Maturity)
and Kadimah (Looking
Forward).
On Wednesday afternoon, about 80 members and guests enjoyed a lunch buffet that featured three different kugels, salad, rolls, fruit and dessert. Bea Goodman welcomed everyone, and Barbara Goldstein talked about the NHS Gift Shop registry and Hanukkah sale. Then Rabbi David Siff led a discussion on "What is our purpose as a Conservative Synagogue?"
Writing on a white board, Rabbi Siff asked the participants to offer ideas on how to tweak religious services and
supplement activities to make participation more meaningful to contemporary lives. Topics included social action, adult education, adding spirituality with chanting and meditation, and inclusion of non-Jewish spouses. Services could be improved by adding more English readings and music. If you would like to add your voice to the discussion, please contact Rabbi Siff at dasiff@gmail.com.
