On the Road to Morocco
With Guest Speakers:
Connie Hinitz, Bobbi Handwerger and Sonia Milrod
For Connie Hinitz, Bobbi Handwerger, and Sonia Milrod, visiting Morocco not only was on their bucket list, but it exceeded all expectations. As Bobbi Handwerger said, "Morocco was more fascinating than I could have imagined. The whole trip, especially the Jewish history, was so interesting." They will share their Moroccan adventures at the next HaZaK program on January 15, 2020 at 12pm noon at Northern Hills Synagogue.
The group traveled to Morocco last March on the Gate 1 18-day Absolute Morocco trip. Their trip covered cities – Rabat, Tangier, Fez, Marrakesh, Agadir, Essaouira and Casablanca – as well as villages and kasbahs in the high, mid and low Atlas and the Sahara. Their presentation will include photos and artifacts from their journey and focus on both Jewish history as well as Moroccan history and culture – because they are inextricably intertwined.
As Connie Hinitz explained, "Even on the standard tour, visiting Jewish sites was part of the regular itinerary."
Sonia Milrod said, "Our amazing tour director, Amine, a Berber Arab, was knowledgeable and eager to help us uncover the Jewish history and sites. And, we often arranged with our Gate 1 local guides to take us to the Jewish areas after the formal group tour was over – especially in Chefchaouan and Essaourira. For Fes, though, I arranged for a private Jewish tour because there is just so much to see there."
HaZaK, which stands for Hokma (wisdom), Zikna (maturity), and Kadima (forward) provides monthly programs for people 55+ at Northern Hills Synagogue, 5714 Fields Ertel Road (between I-71 and Snider Road) beginning at noon with a luncheon followed by the program. The program is free and open to the public, but participants are asked for a donation to insure the continuation of the program.
Connie Hinitz said, "I loved meeting and interacting with Moroccans and partaking of their cuisine. When we were taken to the northern coast, I was amazed to see the actual demarcation between the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea! I look forward to sharing the highlights of our trip with everyone at HAZAK!"
