After a hiatus due to COVID 19, Northern Hills Synagogue is resuming HaZaK programming virtually through Zoom. Programs are confirmed for March, April and May. HaZaK, which stands for Hokma (wisdom), Zikna (maturity), and Kadima (forward), provides monthly programs for people age 55+. Programs are free and open to the public with reservations required.
On Wednesday, March 17, at 1:00 PM, Stacey Schimberg, Film Festival Committee Chair, gave a presentation on selected films from the Cincinnati JCC Jewish & Israeli Film Festival. Films were available for viewing January 23rd—February 18th.
The Wednesday, April 21st program will feature Bill Deitzer, speaking on "America's Best Idea: Celebrating 100+ Years of the National Park Service." Bill will describe how America's Best Idea got started including our national parks, monuments and historic sites. The talk also includes some amusing questions asked of Park Rangers. Deitzer has hiked in 51 National Parks and in all 50 U.S. states. He is a member of the 900 Mile Club having hiked all 800 trail miles in the Great Smokies Mountain National Park. He completed seven hikes to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and he has hiked to the highest point of 45 of the 50 United States geographical highpoints. Deitzer retired as CFO of Cincinnati State Technical & Community College.
On Wednesday, May 19, at 2:00 PM (note change in time!), Abby Schwartz, Director of the Cincinnati Skirball Museum will present "Take Ten! A Close Look at Modern Israeli Art." Schwartz will share and discuss ten works by nine artists: Anna Ticho, Mordecai Ardon, Yosl Bergner, Marcel Janco, Menashe Kadishman, Reuven Rubin, Ivan Schwebel, Shalom of Safed, and David Gerstein. These are some of the best-known and most influential artists living and working in Israel throughout the twentieth century. Their works are recent gifts to the Skirball Museum from Nancy Berman and Alan Bloch. Schwartz has served as director of the Skirball Museum on the campus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion since 2013. She is the former curator of education at the Taft Museum of Art, and a former Taft Museum of Art docent. She has lectured widely on Jewish art, notably at the Melton School and the Osher Life Long Learning Institute of the University of Cincinnati.
May will mark the last Northern Hills Synagogue HaZaK program before the summer break. Hopefully, when programming resumes in September, the face-to-face format can be resumed.
